CATHOLICS SPEAK OUT IN ROME AGAINST BISHOPS' SYNOD

Articulate New Vision for the Future Church.

A Press Conference will be held:

WHEN: Monday, 11th October 1999, 11 am

WHERE: "Sala Incontri", Via delle Fornaci 50, vicino a Largo Porta Cavalleggeri

WHO: International Movement We are Church (IMWAC) &  European Network Church on the Move (EN)

WHY: The Press Conference will release and discuss the findings of the Lay Catholic Synod held in Rome Oct. 7-10, 1999. Participants in the Forum or Shadow Synod committed themselves to open discussion for the issues facing the church today, especially as it relates to the Catholic faithful  in the pews. Issues for discussion include the structure of the church and participation by the faithful in the decision-making processes, the position of women in the church and society, conflict and reconciliation in Europe. Contentious issues such as the continued ban on contraception, the ordination of women, priestly celibacy and democratic decision making in the church are being discussed and debated. Most importantly the Lay Catholic Movement will articulate at the Press Conference a vision of the future church.

SPEAKERS: Elfriede Harth (speaking for IMWAC), Isaac Wuest (speaking for EN)
